Reading Ulysses with Seamus Cannon 2023

Due to popular demand we are running this course again!

Last year James Joyce's Ulysses turned 100 years old - surely you heard of it???

You’ve possibly tried a few times to read it and given up in frustration. Well, the good news is that everybody has. It is not an easy read but while Ulysses has a reputation for being difficult, it rewards persistence and is worth the effort for the lifelong enjoyment it affords. It is also a very humorous read - and think of how your friends will be impressed!

This is an opportunity to read Ulysses at your leisure under expert guidance and share your difficulties and enjoyment with others. We’ll even provide fashion advice for Bloomsday! We proudly proclaim that this is for enjoyment in a jocoserious way!

All talks will be delivered in an informal style and include vivid illustrations of locations and readings. Over 19 one-hour sessions each episode (there are 18 of them!) will be introduced and difficulties explained. You can drop in and out as you wish. We begin in January and finish in time for Bloomsday.  We will also have two or three walks in Dublin, for those of you who can attend.

Séamus Cannon has been offering this course for over a decade just to encourage you to read Ireland’s most popular novel. The course will be delivered on Zoom and each lecture will be recorded so that if you miss it you have two weeks to check it out before it is deleted.
