19LC 10 015 - Sensory Food Education for Teachers

Deirdre from The Cool Food School is a mum of 3 and a Health Coach. She has brought her fun, interactive, healthy eating workshops to thousands of children since setting up last year both in preschools, schools and at events like Bloom, Taste of Dublin and the Festival of Food in Airfield Estate, Dundrum. She has been chosen as an Ambassador for the upcoming international chefs symposium, Food on the Edge, because of the work she is doing in food education for children.

Deirdre also teaches the international Sapere method of sensory food education to teachers so that they can, in turn, share it with their students.

This method, which originated in France in the 1970’s, is now taught around the world in several countries. The programme doesn’t teach children

about what they should and shouldn’t eat but rather, how to eat using the senses. Short, easy, inexpensive experiments help to awaken children’s curiosity in food, thus expanding their palette and helping them to become more adventurous eaters, a vital step towards eating a balanced and varied diet. There is much scope for cross curricular activities with the programme (literacy, Irish, maths and more).
