19LC 03 021 - Working as a Leadership Team

Given the complexity of leading a post-primary school, it is critically important that the leadership team works cohesively and competently. The day to day realities of working effectively as a Principal with one, two or three Deputy Principals are explored in an experiential and pragmatic way. In order to support an effective leadership team, a number of key areas will be addressed. These include: 

  • An overview of the role of the Deputy
  • Understanding Context: The importance of the Establishment Phase
  • Responding to need and expectation
  • Identifying interests, capacities and challenges
  • Identifying, describing and agreeing the roles and responsibilities of each member of the team
  • Agreeing A way of working together (Professional arrangements-the bedrock, Centrality of Communication-mechanisms to ensure ‘flow’/’in the loop’/confidentiality /support and trust/non-negotiables, Staff relations-situational awareness/empathy & respect/creativity and lateral thinking, Decisive decision making/flexibility/synthesising skills and procedural intelligence explored through scenarios
  • Defining the Leadership Team within the Looking at Our Schools Framework – (Domains and Standards-Leadership and Management)
  • Leading Learning
  • Managing the Organisation
  • Leading School Development
  • Developing Leadership Capacity
  • Agreeing procedures and Protocols.
  • Review and evaluation mechanisms
