Reading Ulysses with Seamus Cannon - 2022

Reading Ulysses with Seamus Cannon - 2022

2022 the Centenary of Ulysses, the year to finally realise your ambition to read Ireland’s most popular unread book!

Did you know that Ulysses was published on February 2nd 1922, James Joyce’s 40th birthday?

On February 2nd 2022, it will be 100 years old and will be celebrated around the world. Bloomsday 2022 will be a very special Bloomsday, and you’ll want to be at the heart of it. If you ever wanted to read Ulysses, now is your opportunity.

You’ve possibly tried it a few times and given up in frustration. Well, the good news is that everybody has. It is not an easy read but while Ulysses has a reputation for being difficult, it rewards persistence and is worth the effort for the lifelong enjoyment it affords. It is also a very humorous read - and think of how your friends will be impressed!

This is an opportunity to read Ulysses at your leisure under expert guidance and share your difficulties and enjoyment with others. We’ll even provide fashion advice for Bloomsday! We proudly proclaim that this is for enjoyment in a jocoserious way!

All talks will be delivered in an informal style and include vivid illustrations of locations and readings. Over 20 one-hour sessions each episode (there are 18 of them!) will be introduced and difficulties explained. You can drop in and out as you wish. We begin in January and finish in time for Bloomsday. What a way to get through Covid!

Séamus Cannon has been offering this course for over a decade just to encourage you to read Ireland’s most popular novel. The course will be delivered on Zoom and each lecture will be recorded so that if you miss it you have two weeks to check it out before it is deleted.

Séamus is the current chairperson of the Friends of Joyce Tower Society and believes there is no better way to prepare for the centenary of Ulysses than to read the work.
