Books make great gifts because...
Books make great figts because they have whole worlds inside of them. And it's much cheaper to buy somebody a book than it is to buy them the whole world!
Well, it is nearly that magical time of the year again……how quickly Christmas comes around, and of course we are all getting younger and younger!
Here in Blackrock Education Centre, we have a few lovely publications which would make really special stocking fillers.
As you know, we have been promoting the wonderful Write a book Project and it has been incredibly successful. ^th class children from the various schools in our catchment area have written some beautiful stories and demonstrated wonderful literary skills. Any child reading these books would delight in the stories as well as be inspired by the young authors and, who knows, may well become a best-selling author themselves someday! We have some copies available for the years relating to 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 - €5 each. They would make lovely stocking fillers!
Seamus Cannon is the author of two really interesting books which are also available from Blackrock Education Centre and outline in marvellous detail the history and exciting stories associated with Monkstown and Dún Laoghaire Harbour. These books are called ‘Monkstown: A Victorian Village’ and ‘You’d Be Filled With Wonder: The Story of Dún Laoghaire Harbour’.
You'd be Filled with Wonder tells the story of the 200 year old Dun Laoghaire Harbour. This is a story of shipwrecks, forgotten heroes, prison ships & tordepoes! Above all it is a human story of poverty, hardship and true determination.
(Available Library packs of 30 books for €200,
in English, Irish or mixed)
The author Seamus Cannon and photographer Carole Cullen have created an affectionate and evocative celebration of the social and architectural heritage of the Co Dublin village of Monkstown.
Today's Monkstown is largely the creation of the nineteenth century but also has a significant early history, both are beautifully written about and illustrated. There is also mention of the many Monkstown residents who made substantial contributions to society at home and abroad.
Another fabulous book is called ‘Reading the Maps: A Guide to the Irish Historic Towns Atlas’ by Jacinta Prunty and H.B. Clarke. In this book, the reader will discover that every Irish town has a story to tell through maps and texts.
The Irish Historic Towns Atlas is a comprehensive and systematic treatment of Irish towns. Now that a critical mass of individual fascicles and ancillary works has been published, the richness of this resource can be exploited. Readers will discover that every town has an interesting story to tell; the Irish Historic Towns Atlas tells those stories through a balanced combination of maps and texts, now told collectively in this wonderful book which is beautifully illustrated throughout.
Go on……buy a book from your local Blackrock Education Centre as your Christmas Stocking filler…..you know you want to.
Remember, we are always here for you to help and support in any way possible, this centre is YOUR CENTRE!!
Best wishes always and fond regards,
Director, Blackrock Education Centre
