This three session course, facilitated by April Cronin, runs on Mondays in November (12th, 19th and 26th) from five to seven thirty.
Session 1: • The basics of chess: how to move the pieces, check and checkmate. • How to teach the basics to young children. Mini-games, based on chess, that can be used easily in the classroom to enhance numeracy. • How to set up your chess club and run competitions in various formats. Sourcing of equipment,
Session 2: • More advanced rules of the game: castling, stalemate, other drawn games, pawn promotion, en passant captures. • Simple chess tactics and strategies for children. How to help children develop beyond moving the pieces randomly! • The most common checkmating patterns.
Session 3: • Further chess tactics and strategies. • How to integrate chess into the primary curriculum.

- These courses have been specifically designed for principals, teachers, middle managers, APs, DPs and any professional who is already in, or who aspires to be in, a leadership role
- The course is accredited through the Association for Coaching (AC) and may be used to progress towards accreditation as AC coach, an internationally recognized award. The course incorporates guidance towards becoming a fully accredited coach
