A WILDFLOWER MEADOW

A mini wildflower meadow looks particularly well in June. It is abundant with common meadow flowers such as, meadow buttercup, oxeye daisy, cat's ear and grasses such as, sweet vernal, red fescue and common bent. This habitat will abound with wildlife such as butterflies, hoverflies, bumble bees and birds.

REQUIREMENTS FOR AWILDFLOWER MEADOW

• A sunny site.
• Poor soil.
• A packet of native meadow-mix seeds. (This will usually contain grass and wildflower seeds mixed in a ratio of 4:1.)
• Sawdust or horticultural sand.
• A spade and rake.
• Cotton thread or plastic shopping bags tied to sticks to deter birds.

WHEN TO SOW A WILDFLOWER MEADOW

The seeds can be sown from the beginning of April to the middle of May or from the beginning of September to the middle of October.

THE SITEThe size of the site doesn't matter. A meadow can be created on a couple of square metres of ground. It is better to start small and expand later, as seeds for a meadow are expensive. A meadow looks best, if it is sited near a pond, marsh or woodland area. In these situations, it will act as a corridor for wildlife.
