Creating & Using ICT Resources for Literacy

Course Objectives
The course enables teachers to:
- gain an understanding of the potential uses of ICT to support literacy development
- use digital media and online resources to create teaching and learning resources for literacy development in the primary classroom
- explore how ICT can be used to enhance cross curricular teaching and learning
- become familiar with technologies including digital projectors and visualisers and how they can be used for literacy development.
The course relates to the following areas of the NCCA ICT Framework:
- Area C – Creating, communicating and collaborating
- Area F – Foundational knowledge, skills and concepts
Course Content
Module 1:
Introduction to ICT in the primary classroom
This module provides an introduction to curricular uses of ICT in the primary classroom, and participants will learn how to create a resource using word processing software.
Module 2:
Using the Internet to support literacy development
Participants will explore online resources including Scoilnet and Encyclopaedia Britannica which support literacy and numeracy development, and will learn about effective use of the Internet in the classroom and Internet Safety
Module 3:
Using Digital Media to support literacy development
This module provides an introduction to using digital cameras and other digital media in the primary classroom including recording software. Participants will explore how digital media can be used as an aid to literacy development.
Module 4:
Digital Storytelling
Using Photostory and online resources, participants will create a digital story suitable for use in their own classroom. Participants will explore the use of digital storytelling for literacy development.
Module 5:
Using Presentation Software for literacy
Participants will learn how to use presentation software and incorporate images and other digital media into their presentations. Participants will learn about other technologies which support literacy development, including visualisers, skype and Web 2.0 tools
